A Jennings Univox J5 from 1952
Serial number unknown.
A composite image of a Univox J5 sold some years ago. Various constituent parts of the unit are evidently loose, i.e. not positioned and fixed in as they should be, giving a slightly misleading impression of the arrangement.
It is likely that this J5 left the factory with two ten inch speakers, and that its power section, propped up at right in the upper right hand picture, originally sat horizontally behind the keyboard. This at least is the arrangement in a slightly more complete early J5.
The speaker is likely to be one of the two originals, a Goodmans T6/1030/3 - "T6" being the frame type; "1030" the type of cone; "3" the nominal impedance.
An overview of the Univox in 1952 is in progress here, more to come, particularly in relation to Derek Underdown's professionalising of production. Derek began at Jennings on the 3rd of June 1952.
A set of images of a J5 from early 1953 can be found on this page.
The seller's recommendation seemed to be that something different or better could be constructed from the constituent parts. The green-coloured transformer was manufactured by Elstone (Elstone Electronics Limited), the speaker a Goodmans, as mentioned above.
