AC30 chassis assembled by Burndept for JMI
Autumn 1962 to early 1963
The Burndept chassis number of AC30 serial number 6097.
Below, a list of early chassis produced by Burndept arranged by serial number. Salient component date codes are given where known.
Just to note that the chassis were stamped with numbers BEFORE assembly. They were stored, then taken to the work benches for wiring up, in no particular order.
For the time being the date codes are presented without comment. Relevant info in the lists below exists currently for only around 24 amps from a span of over 1000 (in terms of serial number range), far too few for the constructing of hard and fast "rules". Certain patterns can nonetheless be discerned: these will no doubt consolidate as further details come to light.
As for the question of readiness for sale - in other words, the point at which an AC30 was complete - the Celestion blues were generally speaking the latest element to be fitted. Stock sat on shelves for weeks, sometimes months. No "ready reckoners" operate unfortunately.
It should perhaps be mentioned that in some quarters AC30s are being dated by the supposed date of the chassis alone - either by taking the Woden transformer date codes and simply adding a month, or by insisting that the Woden date codes ARE the date of assembly. Retrogression appears to be the fashion (date as early as possible). The less said about all that the better.
Last, simply to remind that Westrex was still the chief assembler of chassis for JMI during this period. Known surviving amps tend to indicate that during the course of 1963 Burndept was asked to increase production, however.
