Burnham Engineering

Fabricators of the metalwork of AC30 chassis, 1950s-c.1961

A detail of Burnham Road and Lawson Road, a little to the north of JMI's Dartford Road works. Burnham Engineering erected a new factory on Lawson Road in 1961.

From the early 1950s to around 1961, Burnham Engineering produced various runs of chassis under contract for JMI - just the metalwork. Electronic assembly and the fitting of hardware was done at Dartford Road. This was in contrast to the two contractors brought in later on - Westrex (in 1961) and Burndept Electronics (autumn 1962). Both not only did their own metal fabrication, but also electronic and hardware assembly from start to finish.

From 1956 to 1961 Burnham's premises were on Burnham Road (it is not known at present precisely where). In 1961, however, various trade journals signalled the move to a new factory on Lawson Road, a spur from Burnham Road. The section of map at the top of the page shows the layout of buildings shortly before the company moved there. More or less coincident with the move, Reg Stampe, Burnham's owner, registered the business with Companies House in London as "Burnham Precision Engineering (Dartford) Limited".

AC30/4 and early AC30/6 chassis

Burnham fabricated the metal chassis of most AC30/4s (TV Front and split-front amps), and AC30/6 chassis through to the point at which Westrex took over (in Spring 1961) - . One way to spot a Burnham-made AC30 chassis is by the presence of circular holes for the slider board fixings. Westrex and Burndept-made chassis have square cut-outs for cage nuts.

A late TV Front AC30/4.

Serial number 5002.

Also to mention that Burnham-made AC30 chassis generally only have four fixing points - two on the front lip and two on the back. Westrex and Burndept provided five (two at the front, three at the back).

Burnham worked for JMI through to the later 1960s, producing metal casings for footswitches, effects, and so on.
