An early Westrex Treble chassis (early 1964)

The main page on Westrex, one of JMI's chief sub-contractors (from late 1960 to early 1965), .

Although the majority of Westrex-made chassis were used by JMI in 1964 for AC30 Super Twins, a certain number went to AC30 Twins. Below, pictures of an early example of the latter, serial number unknown, but likely to have been in the low to mid 11000s, just possibly high 10000s.

As has been , early "Treble" amps were regularly sent out from Dartford Road with serial number plates giving the voicing as "Normal" - probably so too in the case of the amp pictured below.

Relevant component date codes, ranging from July 1963 to January 1964, are given in the captions to the pictures. The original valves survive too: yellow-print Blackburn-made Mullards with November '63 paint codes in the preamp, and Canadian-made (Ontario factory) Mullard EL84s. Canadian-made Mullards are also to be found in AC30 Twin serial number 10317, chassis assembled by Burndept; and AC30 Super Twin serial number 2791, which has a slightly later "Westrex Treble" chassis than the one in view on this page. An overview of amps with original valves .

General views

Cabinet covered in finely-textured dark grey vinyl, grille cloth renewed.

The original vents will have been black.

Detail of the logo and vinyl.

Rear.

Chipboard baffle, indicating manufacture of the cab by Gla-Rev, "378" also chalked on one of the back panels.

Inner face of the upper back board.

Replacement footswitch.

Control panel

The control panel is identical in detail to the ones on the "Westrex Treble" chassis of serial numbers 11076 and 10077, both Super Twins. Note the "ticks" (arets) at the top of number "1" around the voltage selector for instance, kicking out at 90 degrees to the upright.

Preamp

"Westrex Treble" stamped in purply-blue under the input jacks.

General view of the preamp.

Input jacks (manufactured by Rendar).

Preamp detail.

Gold-coloured TCC cathode bypass capacitor with the date code "UJ" = September 1963. Red dye was painted on the solder joints by the checker/inspector at Westrex to indicate that the work was good.

Detail of the TCC capacitor.

Tone pot with the date code "AL" = January 1964.

Main preamp filter cap with "UG" = July 1963.

Power section

Albion output transformer. The mains transformer has been replaced.

Underside of the output transformer.

Detail of the power section (underchassis). The main bias resistor is 50R.

22K resistor, date code "UM" = December 1963.

Valves

Preamp valves. Two of the (original) yellow-print Mullards have "KK" paint codes = November 1963.

Yellow-print Mullard ECC82, manufacturing code (prior to painting) "B3J3" = Blackburn factory, 3rd week of October, 1963.

EL84 with manufacturing code "r3G1" = Ontario factory, 1st week of July 1963.
