Fire at the West Street Works, Erith

December 1965

The Works, late 1950s, at that time occupied solely by Burndept Electronics, which owned the building.

A page on the Works, rented in part by Jennings from Burndept Electronics, (on the Vox AC100 website). Jennings began moving lines of production there from Dartford in the last quarter of 1964.

Although the fire of December 1965 was not the first of the year, it was by a long measure the worst. The cause (as on previous occasions): faulty oil heaters. Fortunately staff were able to leave the building safely before the fire brigade arrived. A great deal of stock perished though, especially on the top floor. Water ruined more as it cascaded through the lower floors.

From a report of the fire in the local Dartford press, December 1965. The mention of "Beatles type amplifiers" by Reg Clark, JMI's General Sales Manager, means AC100s.

Following the fire, production started again fairly swiftly in a building nearby made available to JMI by Burndept Electronics. By early Spring 1966, the West Street Works were back in action, however, a remarkably efficient clean-up having taken place (as announced by Tom). It took some time to move guitar and organ assembly back in though.
